Seminar “Promoting Green and Sustainable Construction – International experience and proposing solutions for Vietnam”

On August 22, 2023, the Science – Technology and Environment Department (Ministry of Construction) in collaboration with the College of Urban Works Construction and the Vietnam Green Building Council held the seminar “Promoting Green and Sustainable Construction – International experience and proposing solutions for Vietnam” at the Center for Research and Training in Application and Transfer of Green Construction Technology in Vietnam – College of Urban Works Construction – CUWC (Yen Thuong, Gia Lam, Hanoi City).
The seminar had welcomed the participation of leaders of organizations of the Ministry of Construction, representatives of research institutes, universities, businesses and representatives of VILANDCO – the LOTUS Green Building certification consultant for the project.

Speaking at the opening of the seminar, Mr. Nguyen Cong Thinh – Deputy Director of the Science – Technology and Environment Department said that the goal of the seminar was to deploy and implement activities to use energy efficiently, develop green buildings market and promote green and sustainable construction. Besides, the seminar will be more meaningful when being held at the Center for Research and Training in Application and Transfer of Green Construction Technology in Vietnam – a project that has gained LOTUS Gold certification for New Construction.

During the seminar, Ms. Phan Thu Hang – Chairman of the Vietnam Green Building Council gave a speech on Global Policy Principles cover seven key areas for a sustainable built environment.

Talking about the Center for Research and Training in Application and Transfer of Green Construction Technology in Vietnam, architect Nguyen Trung Kien, MSc. – Vice President of IBPSA Vietnam, Director of VILANDCO, said that VILANDCO was honored to play the role of LOTUS green building consultant in this project. Green contents are included in many different technical items of the project. Mr. Nguyen Trung Kien shared, the building is designed with green and open spaces and flexible architectural solutions for shading, using environmentally friendly materials, combining natural lighting with reasonable artificial lighting, using high-performance equipment to bring about efficiency in energy and water use for the building, solutions to improve air quality and convenience for users, etc. Besides, the use of technological solutions on renewable energy such as rooftop solar panels, wind power and geothermal systems are unique solutions and bring high energy efficiency to the building. In addition, the BIM model used throughout the design, construction and operation stages of the building ensures the coordination of all parties in the project.

According to Mr. Nguyen Trung Kien, the project consulted by VILANDCO meets some typical green construction criteria as follows:
– Total energy consumption of the building decreased by 21.4%
– 45% of rainwater is reused out of the total water consumption of the building
– 100% of non-structural walls are made of non-baked materials
– 94% of the usable area meets the requirements for fresh air supply
– 84% of the usable area meets the requirements for natural lighting
– 94% of the usable area meets the requirements for outside visibility

At the seminar, experts, managers and representatives of organizations also discussed about promoting green and sustainable construction in Vietnam and expressed their will to use the building as a center to organize training activities, conferences, seminars and events about Green Building in Vietnam.
